MixWithTheMasters RUSSELL ELEVADO, D’ANGELO “TILL IT’S DONE” Deconstructing A Mix #21

Join us at Red Bull studios in New York for a mixing series with analog fanatic Russell Elevado! Using a SSL 9000 J-series console and a selection of quality outboard equipment, the renowned engineer builds a new mix of ‘Till It’s Done’ by D’Angelo. Elevado shares his rationale for using no plug-ins, drawing comparisons with the fundamentals of hardware versus modeled software. He also discusses the benefits of console workflow, elaborates on differences between SSL models, reveals why he most often uses no mix buss chain, and takes you through the gear used on this project. As you watch Russell mix the multi-track from scratch, you’ll see how he creatively uses EQ, compression, tape effects and more on vocals, drums, bass, guitar, and keyboards. Aside from techniques, you’ll learn of his thoughts on sample rates, monitoring, creativity under pressure, and other pertinent subjects.
